Downsizing is one of those moves that sounds simple until you're standing in your garage looking at 30 years of accumulated life. The truth is, it's not just about finding a smaller house. It's about deciding what comes with you into the next chapter.
Start with the why
Before you touch a single box, get clear on your motivation. Are you looking to reduce maintenance? Lower your expenses? Move closer to family? Simplify your daily life? When you anchor to the "why," the hard decisions get easier.
Work room by room, not all at once
The biggest mistake people make is trying to tackle everything in a weekend. That leads to exhaustion and decision fatigue. Instead, pick one room per week. Start with the spaces that are easiest: guest rooms, the garage, storage areas: and work toward the harder ones like the kitchen and primary bedroom.
Three questions for every item
For each thing you're considering, ask: Do I use this regularly? Does it fit in my new space? Does it serve the life I'm building? If the answer to all three is no, it's time to let it go.
Donate, gift to family, sell, or discard. What matters is that each item makes a decision, not just moves to another pile.
Get help when you need it
This is one area where having support makes an enormous difference. Whether it's family, friends, a professional organizer, or your REALTOR, don't try to do it all alone. I help my clients create realistic timelines and connect them with resources that make the transition manageable.
Downsizing is a big move. Yet with the right plan and the right support, it can be one of the most freeing decisions you ever make.
