The short answer: this stretch on both sides of the state line is a quiet gift for golfers. The Illinois South Suburbs stack up the 72-hole Cog Hill landmark in Lemont, a classic Cook County public layout, a 45-hole club in Frankfort and a veteran-focused course in Tinley Park, while Northwest Indiana answers with a links course on Lake Michigan, a 1925 classic in Crown Point and one of the state's most talked-about golf communities. You can play a different public course every weekend for a month without repeating, and most tee times are a short drive from home.

Where are the best public courses in Illinois?

From the Cook County forest preserve system to the Will County park districts, the Illinois side is stacked with public golf that plays well and stays affordable. These are the courses buyers and sellers in my Illinois towns actually book, weekday and weekend.

Cog Hill Golf & Country Club

Lemont, IL

A Lemont landmark and a 72-hole public facility where no membership is required. Course No. 4, Dubsdread, is the championship layout that hosted the Western Open and the BMW Championship and stays ranked among Golf Digest's best public-access courses in Illinois. The Toptracer practice range keeps getting better: heated bays and the Bay 43 event space make practice feel like a night out. The fall slate is busy: Fall Night Golf returns October 2, the Fall Scramble plays October 3-4, Play Dubs Like the Pros follows October 7, the Trick or Treat Open on Course No. 3 lands October 10, the Dubsdread Fall Stableford closes things out October 18 and a Toptracer Night wraps up the month on October 30.

George W. Dunne National Golf Course

Oak Forest, IL

The flagship public course of the Cook County Forest Preserve golf system. The bunker renovation has been the story of 2026: the front nine is done, back-nine work has continued through the season and some holes still play to temporary greens while the finishing touches go in, including the removal of the former waste bunker on No. 16. The Thursday Fall League runs into late October at about $29 a round plus cart, the Forest Preserves Season Pass ($79.99 a month, valid April 1 through October 31) adds 2 PM twilight rates, unlimited range balls and 7-day advance booking at the county courses, and the grass driving range stays one of the best practice setups in the south suburbs.

Green Garden Country Club

Frankfort, IL

Now operating as SPG Green Garden Country Club, still 45 holes at one address: the Blue (1973), Gold (1991) and Links (2010) nines combine into two full 18s plus a nine-hole loop. Frankfort gets a country-club feel on a daily-fee basis, and 2026 hot-deal rates have run as low as the mid-$30s on The Links.

Odyssey Golf Course

Tinley Park, IL

Run by the Odyssey Golf Foundation, with play supporting programs for veterans and first responders. The 18-hole championship layout on Ridgeland Avenue is in the middle of a major chapter: a roughly $20 million renovation and rebuild campaign with Renaissance Golf Management will remake the course and clubhouse as a Folds of Honor facility, with a reopening targeted for late 2026 or early 2027, so check the course’s own site before booking. The village-approved Topgolf for the nearby Odyssey entertainment district had still not opened as of late September, so the corner keeps evolving either way.

Silver Lake Country Club

Orland Park, IL

A long-running public club on 82nd Avenue with 45 holes across the North, South and Rolling Hills courses. Its 2026 Junior Golf League for ages 8 to 13 filled up fast, and the club stays busy with leagues, weddings and outings all season. Solid conditioning at fair rates.

Frankfort, IL

The Frankfort Square Park District friendly layout where plenty of Lincoln-Way golfers carded their first birdie. Easy pace, easy price.

The Sanctuary Golf Course

New Lenox, IL

A New Lenox Park District course with a strong local reputation. The tree-lined fairways make it a favorite for twilight rounds.

White Mountain Executive Golf Course

Orland Park, IL

A lightly wooded executive course in Orland Park with a quick pace of play, ideal for beginners, seniors and anyone short on time.

Cross the state line and the character changes: a lakefront links course in Hammond, a club built in 1925 in Crown Point and a three-nines community course that plays like private. Every course below is open to the public and worth the drive.

Aberdeen Golf Club

Valparaiso, IN

A well-conditioned championship layout on Valparaiso’s northeast edge, playing through gentle hills. A fixture of Porter County golf.

Centennial Park Golf Course

Munster, IN

Munster’s municipal course, minutes off Calumet Avenue. Friendly, walkable and one of the best values in Lake County.

Lost Marsh Golf Course

Hammond, IN

Links-style golf right on Lake Michigan with that dependable lake breeze, laid out on reclaimed lakefront land by architect Charles Howard and topped by a Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired clubhouse and restaurant. It also has a 300-yard outdoor range, an indoor practice building and a nine-hole executive course. The Bears' stadium story keeps moving: the team completed due diligence on this site and is now studying the nearby Wolf Lake Terminal, a candidate the Bears have floated merging with this one into a single footprint in a plan that could spare the course and fold it into a year-round stadium village. No land deal is signed, and Lost Marsh remains fully open, booking tee times daily straight through the season.

Oak Knoll Golf Club

Crown Point, IN

Open since 1925, one of the oldest courses in Northwest Indiana, and it shows its character in mature trees and a classic routing.

Palmira Golf & Country Club

St. John, IN

A polished public club in St. John with a full practice area, drawing golfers from across the Lake Central towns.

Sandy Pines Golf Club

DeMotte, IN

An 18-hole, par-72 public course opened in 1973 and designed by William J. Spear, with distinctive Pine Barrens topography and impressive greens. On site: the SP19 restaurant, a pavilion for events, junior golf programs, leagues and a pro shop. Call (219) 987-3611. DeMotte sits in Jasper County, one of the service-area towns I cover across Northwest Indiana.

Schererville, IN

A longtime Schererville favorite on the US-30 corridor that stays busy with events and outings, and now runs a Junior Executive League for ages 10 to 15 plus footgolf packages. Flat, fair and always in good shape for the price.

Turkey Creek Golf Course

Merrillville, IN

Merrillville’s municipal layout, a breezy prairie-style course that stays busy from the first thaw to the last leaf. It routinely posts steep twilight and hot deals on GolfNow, so watch for the discounted tee times.

White Hawk Country Club

Crown Point, IN

The 36-hole build-out approved by the town in 2025 now gives the club four nines, Red Hawk, Grey Hawk, Black Hawk and Silver Hawk, designed by Tim and Dick Nugent with Silver Hawk the longest and toughest of the four. The tee sheet stays open to the public on a semi-private basis, the layout anchors the White Hawk community and everything stays bookable online.

Briar Ridge Country Club

Schererville, IN

Private, membership required. A full clubhouse and a well-regarded course at the heart of the Briar Ridge neighborhood.

Innsbrook Country Club

Merrillville, IN

Private, membership required. Merrillville’s long-established club with a challenging layout and a busy events calendar.

The two cards above are the private options on the Indiana side: Briar Ridge in Schererville and Innsbrook in Merrillville are both membership clubs. For everything else, the tee sheet is open to the public, and weekend times book ahead at the busiest layouts.

What's the best golf season here?

Plan on golf from April through November, with the calendar at its best from mid-May to early October. Summer means long twilight rounds when the courses empty out after six, and autumn is the secret favorite: crisp air, firm fairways and the best playing conditions of the year before the winter shutdown. When the snow flies, the indoor simulators at X-Golf, The Golf Facility, The Haven and Valparaiso's new The Golf Lodge, plus the heated practice area at Lost Marsh, keep the swing alive on both sides of the state line.

Good to know this fall: the Presidents Cup wraps its run at Medinah this weekend, September 22-27, and hot-deal twilight rates keep showing up on GolfNow and most course apps through November. Before you book: George Dunne's back-nine bunker work is finishing with some temporary greens still in play, White Hawk now markets its four nines as a 36-hole layout, Cog Hill's October calendar adds Fall Night Golf (October 2), the Fall Scramble (October 3-4), Play Dubs Like the Pros (October 7), the Trick or Treat Open (October 10), the Dubsdread Fall Stableford (October 18) and a Toptracer Night (October 30), and Odyssey remains mid-rebuild with a reopening window of late 2026 to early 2027. The Tinley Topgolf had still not opened as of late September.
