A national seashore's worth of dunes, a 22-mile paved rail trail, big natural lakes and small-town beaches all sit within an easy drive of the Chicago South Suburbs and Northwest Indiana. Where are the best hiking and paved trails?

Both states punch well above their weight on trails. Illinois brings the forest preserves and rail trails of the South Suburbs; Indiana brings the dunes, the Deep River corridor and the national park. Here is where locals actually walk, run and ride.

Hickory Creek Bikeway

New Lenox, IL

More than eight paved miles through the Hickory Creek forest preserves. The New Lenox and Mokena sections make an easy creekside daily loop, and the district flags Hickory Creek Preserve as one of its top fall-color destinations, so aim for the third week of October. The district-wide asphalt-assessment program that began July 6, 2026 keeps closing access areas and trail stretches as each pavement study wraps, and flooding and short construction closures keep popping up, so confirm the stretch you plan to ride is open before you go.

Messenger Woods Nature Preserve

Homer Glen, IL

A 441-acre Will County preserve with quiet trails through woods and wetlands on Bruce Road. It reopened in June 2026 with a brand-new entrance road after a three-week upgrade, so access is better than ever. A close-to-home escape that rarely feels busy.

Old Plank Road Trail

Joliet to Chicago Heights, IL

22 paved miles on a former rail line threading through New Lenox and Frankfort. The $1.3 million, seven-mile Joliet-to-New-Lenox rehab from Schoolhouse Road to Washington Street is finished and riding beautifully this fall. Storm cleanup from the July and August storms continues: the district’s latest closure page shows the trail open from Washington Street to Park Road, with sections east of Park Road still being cleared of downed trees as of late September and the Monee Reservoir Visitor Center still closed. Check the Will County Forest Preserve closure page before you head out. Flat, wide and off the roads, it is the region’s walking and cycling anchor.

Sag Valley Forest Preserve

Palos, IL

The heart of the Palos forest preserves: miles of wooded trail along the Cal-Sag with real elevation changes, uncommon this close to the suburbs. The Forest Preserves of Cook County’s largest-ever restoration effort, a $10 million trail and habitat project, is underway: ecological work around Red Gate Woods runs through 2027, unpaved trail reconstruction is in engineering design, and work at Swallow Cliff starts in 2026, so expect rolling detours and closures for the next few seasons.

Thorn Creek Trail

Park Forest to Lansing, IL

Nearly 23 miles of paved and unpaved trail stitching together south-suburban forest preserves from Park Forest through the Southland. The pedestrian bridge over Thorn Creek at Will County’s Thorn Creek Woods Nature Preserve in Park Forest remains closed after being deemed structurally unsafe in December 2024, and that keeps the Woodland, Owl Lake and Wetland trails behind it closed. The Friends of Thorn Creek Woods spent the summer fundraising, with plans for a rebuilt bridge with steel beams at the same crossing, yet no reopening had been confirmed as of late September, so check the district’s closure page for news. The half-mile Nature Center Loop stays open, and the Cook County sections, repaired in 2025, remain rideable.

Deep River County Park Trails

Hobart, IN

More than 1,300 acres along the Deep River, with wooded trails starting right at the historic grist mill. The most popular Lake County Parks hike, and fall 2026 keeps the calendar full: cornmeal-grinding mill tours through October, hayrides, a Fall in Love with Your Parks program on October 16 and a Blue Moon Halloween Hike and Campfire on October 31.

Indiana Dunes National Park Trails

Porter, IN

50-plus miles of trail across 15 systems: dunes, prairies, wetlands and shoreline. Marquette Greenway construction keeps closing stretches of trail this fall: partial Glenwood Dunes closures are active through the end of the year, the Little Calumet and Mnoké Prairie trail segments are closed through December 31, and Calumet Bike Trail reconstruction runs into 2027. The Greenway itself sits about 65 percent complete, with roughly a $30 million funding gap to finish the hardest sections. The year’s big win: a new 2.7-mile Marquette Greenway link from Miller Beach to the park, ribbon-cut June 6, 2026. Mount Baldy is only partway back: the parking and beach access reopened in June, yet the dune summit itself stays closed over sand-collapse safety concerns, so follow the posted routes. Check nps.gov/indu/status.htm for the latest maps before you go. A national park essentially in your backyard, without the crowds.

Marquette Trail

Gary, IN

A 4.6-mile gravel lakefront rail trail through Gary’s Marquette Park neighborhood, part of Indiana Dunes National Park and a piece of the future Marquette Greenway. It stays open daily from 6 AM to 11 PM, though the trailheads near Grand Boulevard remain closed while the new Miller Beach-to-park link is tied in, and Calumet Bike Trail reconstruction runs into 2027, so follow the posted detours and check the park’s status page before you ride.

Which lakes and water spots are closest?

Lake Michigan is the headline, but the inland lakes are the daily option: natural lakes, county waterparks and quiet fishing holes, all within a short drive of the suburbs.

Kankakee River State Park

Bourbonnais, IL

Four thousand acres along the Kankakee River with some of the state’s best smallmouth-bass water and a busy canoe and kayak scene about an hour from the South Suburbs. Good news on access: the Chippewa campground has been open since its 2023 rebuild, typically April through November, and the riverside bike trail is open too, with the DNR asking riders to stay on the trail. Late September into October is still the sweet spot: the 2026 forecasts put peak color around October 20, with smaller crowds and ideal paddling weather.
