Dog-Friendly Guide to Chicago's South Suburbs & Northwest Indiana

The short answer: Frankfort, Orland Park, Mokena and Tinley Park are the most dog-friendly towns on the Illinois side, and Munster, Highland, Crown Point and Valparaiso lead the way across the state line in Northwest Indiana. Every one of them has a fenced dog park, miles of leashed trails and at least one patio that welcomes pups. If you are house hunting with a four-legged family member, these are the communities I would start with, and the parks, trails and vets below are the ones locals actually use.

Where are the best dog parks and off-leash areas?

Most park districts in the South Suburbs and Northwest Indiana run membership-based dog parks, so plan on a modest annual permit and proof of vaccinations. Here is where your dog gets to run free, close to home.

Illinois

Canine Campus Dog Park

Tinley Park, IL

Built by the Tinley Park-Park District with Orland Township, at 84th Avenue. Annual fee plus proof of vaccinations and licensing.

Frankfort, IL

A 3-acre members-only park in Frankfort with separate areas for large and small dogs. It was voted one of America's top 10 dog parks by Dog Fancy magazine back in 2008, and locals still swear by it.

Messenger Marsh Dog Park

Homer Glen, IL

The Forest Preserve District of Will County's 5-acre fenced park in Homer Glen. It is the closest off-leash option for New Lenox and Mokena residents and needs a district dog permit. Half-price 2026 permits went on sale in July: $20 for residents and $40 for nonresidents, good through the end of the season at all six district dog parks.

The Mokena Community Park District's fenced park on La Porte Road, with separate runs for big and little dogs. An annual permit is required.

Orland Park, IL

Orland Park's membership-based off-leash park at 15600 West Avenue, run by the Village of Orland Park Recreation and Parks department.

Centennial Park Dog Park

Munster, IN

Three gated acres inside Munster's Centennial Park, with separate small and large dog sections, drinking fountains and agility equipment.

A municipal off-leash park in Crown Point near West Street with an annual fee; details are on the Crown Point Parks and Recreation page.

Dogwood Run at Lemon Lake County Park

Lake County, IN

The Lake County Parks off-leash area near Crown Point and Cedar Lake, run with a Pooch Pass. It remained closed for maintenance and upgrades through fall 2026, with no reopening date announced yet, so check the Lake County Parks page before you plan a trip. The fenced Crown Point and Schererville dog parks are the closest backup options.

Dyer Dog Park at Central Park

Dyer, IN

About 3 acres at Dyer's Central Park with separate small and large dog areas. Run by the Town of Dyer; check the town site for current permit details.

Perry Ferrini Dog Park

Schererville, IN

The main dog park for Schererville and the US-30 corridor, with room to really run. Listed on the South Shore region's official pet-friendly roundup.

Valparaiso, IN

Valparaiso Parks' fenced park at Campbell Street with a double-gated entry. Dogs stay on leash from the parking lot to the gate.

Wicker Park Dog Park

Highland, IN

The fenced, membership-based run inside Wicker Memorial Park in Highland. The August 11, 2026 storms downed roughly 350 trees across the park, and the park's site still carried a "closed until further notice" notice into late September even as partial events resumed. The dog run's status has not been confirmed reopened, so check the park site before you head over and plan on Munster or Schererville meanwhile.

Forest Preserves & Trails

Which forest preserves and trails are dog-friendly?

The rules vary by county, so here is the practical version. In Will County, leashed dogs are welcome across the Forest Preserve District (leash 10 feet or shorter), except on natural-surface paths inside state nature preserves. In Cook County, leashed dogs may walk most preserves. In Indiana, the national park and county trails allow leashed dogs under 6 feet. Off-leash time is reserved for the fenced parks above, with a permit.

Bremen Grove Off-Leash Dog Area

Cook County, IL

A designated off-leash area in the Cook County forest preserves at Oak Forest, about 15 minutes from Tinley Park and Orland Park. Applications for the 2026-27 season opened August 28, and the season runs October 1, 2026 through September 30, 2027. Memberships start at $60 per dog for Cook County residents (nonresidents pay more), and one pass covers all three off-leash areas: Bremen Grove, Beck Lake and Miller Meadow. You will also need a veterinarian health form and a negative fecal test. Elsewhere in the Cook County preserves, dogs stay leashed on the right side of the trail.

Will County, IL

A paved loop network through Hickory Creek Preserve near New Lenox and Mokena, with creek and woods views. Skip the Hickory Creek Barrens nature preserve segment: dogs are not allowed inside that protected area.

Will County, IL

22 paved miles from Joliet through New Lenox and Frankfort to Chicago Heights. This is the trail I point out-of-towners to first, and leashed dogs are welcome along it.

Will County, IL

About 22 miles of crushed limestone running south from Joliet. The loose surface is easy on paws but best on cooler, dry days.

Porter County, IN

A quiet gravel trail through the Dunes country. Indiana Dunes National Park allows pets on a leash of 6 feet or shorter on trails and beaches.

Follows the Grand Calumet River through the Lake County lakefront towns on a flat, leashed route.

Porter County, IN

A paved Porter County rail trail running from Hobart toward Valparaiso with wide grassy buffers. Leashed dogs are welcome, and it connects to the Indiana Dunes National Park system.

Good to know: at Indiana Dunes National Park, pets are welcome on a leash of 6 feet or shorter on most trails and beaches, with exceptions at Pinhook Bog, the swimming beaches and the equestrian stretch of the Glenwood Dunes Trail. Check the park's pet rules before heading out.
